Protego Labs

The Client

Recognizing the inadequacy of traditional application security paradigms, Protego Labs (now a part of Check Point) designed the first comprehensive solution built with the unique constraints and opportunities of serverless in mind. Through continuous serverless security posture, dynamic serverless intelligence, and elastic defense, Protego helps organizations achieve control over the security of their applications.

The Challenge

Protego Labs sought the help of Pugh & Tiller PR to launch this security start up its new product and raise awareness of the company and its leadership among those audiences who are interested in security for serverless computing in an effort for the company to ultimately be acquired.

The Solution

Pugh & Tiller PR designed a PR launch campaign with an emphasis on media and influencer relations that focused on reaching highly influential media and bloggers that covered cybersecurity, cloud security, application security, and other issues related to serverless technology. The campaign included an official launch of Protego Labs, leveraging a funding announcement, a series of initiatives, partnerships, and product announcements for promotion, both proactive and reactive story pitching, and pursuing awards opportunities.

The Results

The PR campaign resulted in more than 100 unique placements and mentions in influential media and blogs, including SDxCentral, Security Week, InformationWeek, ComputerWeekly, Fortune, SDTimes, SC Magazine, the Baltimore Sun, and the Baltimore Business Journal.

Over the course of several months, Pugh & Tiller PR continued to conduct media outreach and garner coverage around several initiatives that helped Protego Labs increase awareness and drive industry adoption of serverless technologies, including a partnership with cloud native solutions developer, Mode2; spearheading the (OWASP) Serverless Top 10 report; and launching the Damn Vulnerable Serverless Application (DVSA).

Additionally, Pugh & Tiller PR helped Protego Labs write and place numerous thought leadership articles in influential publications such as Information Management, the New Stack, DevOps Digest, Security Boulevard, and Dark Reading. The firm also initiated an aggressive analyst relations program on behalf of Protego Labs, conducting briefings and ongoing communications with Gartner, Frost & Sullivan, Forrester, 451 Research Group, EMA, IDC, and Securosis that resulted in being featured in multiple industry analyst reports. For these efforts, Protego Labs won a Frost & Sullivan New Product Innovation Award for Serverless Security, the Cybersecurity Excellence Awards for Best Startup, was named a Company to Watch by SDTimes Magazine, and was listed as one of Baltimore’s most promising startups by Technical.ly. After launching, Protego Labs dominated share of voice in the serverless security space, securing 44.9% of the news marketing share against all of competitors combined up through much of 2019. Protego Lab also dominated bake-off testing for security posture and performance, outperforming competitors by a factor of 10x. The company was eventually acquired by leading cyber security company, Check Point in late 2019. Pugh & Tiller continues to serve as a PR agency of record for Check Point.
